Marketed as “ Creations patterned after early American pattern glass”, the Viking Glass Company reproduced a collection of authentic replicas of Boston & Sandwich Glass Factory glassware in the 1970s. These replicas were authorized by the Sandwich Historical Society and were sold by the Sandwich Glass Museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The museum still exists today, preserving the history of the defunct Boston & Sandwich Glass Factory. Viking Glass Company, later called Dalzell/Viking Glass, was closed permanently in 1998.
This small dish is in pristine condition, retaining its original shine with no chips, scratches, or wear. I am unsure of the purpose of this piece. I have seen only one other like it that is described as a “sauce” dish. That piece is made of clear glass.
This pressed glass piece measures 4.25 inches in diameter, is 1” tall, and weighs 4.4 ounces. It is marked “SM” for Sandwich Museum in the center. The color is a beautiful amethyst purple, which I have also seen referred to as plum.
